Football: Mariners leapfrog Beijing Guoan with ACL win

A superb strike from Dutchman Marcel Seip lifted Australia's Central Coast Mariners above Beijing Guoan in their AFC Champions League group in Gosford on Tuesday.

Seip powered home a first-time volley to give the reigning A-League champions a 1-0 win to go top of Group F ahead of FC Seoul's home match with Sanfrecce Hiroshima later Tuesday.

But it was goalkeeper Liam Reddy who was the Mariners' hero with two stunning saves to keep out the Chinese Super League side.

Reddy pulled off a stunning right-hand point blank save to deny Shao Jiayi just before halftime and made a flying save to keep out Zhang Xizhe's penalty attempt in the 68th minute after Ecuador's Joffre Guerron had been brought down in the box.

But minutes after Reddy's penalty save, the Mariners were in front after Seip smashed home South Korean Kim Seung-Yong's cross past Yang Zhi in the Beijing goal.

The win gave the Mariners six points and a point ahead of Beijing Guoan after four of the six group games.

"To go into the last 16 in this competition you have to win your home games, so we're two from two at home and we have another one coming up in two weeks," goalkeeper Reddy said.

"We have put ourselves in a great position going forward."

Mariners coach Phil Moss said his team still had to get another win to go through to the second round of the Asian showpiece.

"Tonight is an important step forward and we got some good performances tonight out of some boys who haven't played 90 minutes for a while," Moss said.

The Mariners face FC Seoul away in their next group match on April 16, while Beijing Guoan are at home to Sanfrecce Hiroshima.
