Parma president Tommaso Ghirardi resigned from his position on Friday in the wake of his team's exclusion from the Europa League.

Parma were denied entry into next season's Europa League due to an unpaid tax bill, with Torino promoted into the competition at their expense.

"I'm finished with football, I'm going back to my little corner of the countryside," said Gherardi at a press conference.

"You football people should be ashamed, I've been denied a success that was earned on the pitch.

"Only an imbecile would have wanted to save 300,000 euros ($410,000), which is 0.6 percent of what I owed, after having paid out 18 million euros," added Gherardi, who said he was putting the club up for sale.

Parma finished sixth in Serie A to gain the final European qualification spot with Torino a point behind in seventh.

But on Thursday Parma lost their final appeal to the Italian Olympic Committee (Coni) against their exclusion from the competition over the unpaid taxes.

Torino president Urbano Cairo spoke of his delight at the club's first European qualification since 1993/94.

"It's the cherry on the cake of our amazing season," said Cairo.

"I'm sorry for Parma. On the pitch they won one more point than us and we congratulated them, but sporting results are not sufficient to play in Europe."

Torino had only missed out on earning the spot by right due to a last minute Alessio Cerci penalty being saved in their 2-2 draw with Fiorentina on the final day of the season, while Parma were beating Livorno 2-0.

Torino will join the competition from the third preliminary round and join Inter Milan and Fiorentina in the Europa League.

Juventus, Roma and Napoli, who must play in the play-off round, qualified for the Champions League.
