Former England manager Steve McClaren has signed a new three-year contract as head coach of Derby County, the English second-tier club announced on Thursday.

McClaren, 53, joined Derby last September after Nigel Clough was sacked and took them to the brink of promotion to the Premier League, only for them to narrowly lose to Queens Park Rangers in the play-off final.

"I'm delighted to sign a new contract with Derby County, along with (coaches) Paul Simpson and Eric Steele, who are vital members of our coaching structure," McClaren told the club website.

"Derby County is a club that is close to all our hearts and we're all delighted to commit our futures to what continues to be an exciting project.

"Last season ended in heartbreaking fashion, but we all have our focus on the future now and there's a real excitement for the season ahead."

Derby open their Championship campaign at home to promoted Rotherham on Saturday.

McClaren managed England between 2006 and 2007, but was sacked by the Football Association after they failed to qualify for the 2008 European Championship.

He subsequently enjoyed a successful spell with Dutch club FC Twente, guiding them to their first ever league title in 2010, before stints at Wolfsburg, Nottingham Forest, Twente again, and as a coach at QPR.
