Former Charlton Athletic manager and one-time England defender Chris Powell has been appointed as the new head coach of Huddersfield Town, the English second-tier club announced on Wednesday.

The 44-year-old, sacked by Charlton in March, succeeds Mark Robins, who left Huddersfield by mutual consent on the opening weekend of the Championship season after a 4-0 defeat by Bournemouth.

Huddersfield chairman Dean Hoyle told the club website: "As I said when the process began, I felt it was important that we found a manager who had 'done it' and Chris certainly fits that bill."

Powell, who won five caps for England at left-back, led Charlton to the League One title in 2012.
