Romania have reappointed their most successful coach of all time, Anghel Iordanescu, for a third spell in charge, the football federation (FRF) said Monday.

Iordanescu was voted for unanimously by the executive committee, according to an FRF statement.

The 64-year-old guided Romania to the World Cup quarter-finals in 1994 with a team including the great Gheorghe Hagi.

Iordanescu replaces Victor Piturca, who quit in mid-October to join Al Ittihad in Saudi Arabia.

Romania are currently second behind Northern Ireland in Euro 2016 qualifying Group E with seven points from three matches.

A former international forward, Iordanescu started his coaching career at Steaua Bucharest, his club as a player, before taking over the Romania helm in 1993.

He left the post in 1998 to coach Greece before furthering his career in Saudia Arabia.

He returned to the Romania job in 2002 for two years but failed to guide them to Euro 2004.
