Former Wolves owner Hayward dies aged 91

Former Wolverhampton Wanderers owner Jack Hayward has died at the age of 91, the English second-tier club announced on Tuesday.

Hayward, who ran the club from 1990 to 2007, passed away in Fort Lauderdale in the United States after a short battle with illness.

"Wolves are a family and we're united in mourning at the loss of one of the club's, and the city's, most cherished sons," said Wolves' current chairman, Steve Morgan.

"Our most sincere condolences go out to Sir Jack's loved ones at this very sad and difficult time."

Hayward was born near Molineux and would go on to turn the stadium into one of the first all-seater football grounds in England.

The Bahamas-based multi-millionaire's finest hour came in May 2003, when he saw Wolves promoted to the Premier League after a 19-year absence.

The three-time English champions spent a season in the top flight, but were relegated the following year.

In a statement on Twitter, the Football Association said: "The @FA is saddened to hear of the passing of @OfficialWolves president Sir Jack Hayward today (Tuesday), aged 91."
