Johnson bail extended in under-age sex case

Sunderland winger Adam Johnson's bail has been extended by five weeks following his arrest on suspicion of sexual activity with an under-age girl, British police revealed on Tuesday.

The England international had been due to attend a police station on Wednesday after being arrested two weeks ago, but a Durham police spokesman said the 27-year-old would now return on April 23 as inquiries continue.

The spokesman also said that a weapon discovered at Johnson's mansion did not require a firearms certificate and that he would not face police action over his possession of it.

Johnson, who has won 12 caps for England, has been suspended by Sunderland pending the outcome of the police investigation.

Johnson began his career with Middlesbrough and returned to his native northeast in 2012 when he joined Sunderland from Manchester City in a £10 million ($15 million, 13 million euros) deal.
