Loew wants Germany fired up for Australia

Joachim Loew wants to see fire in his Germany side for Wednesday's friendly against Asian champions Australia to test their mettle ahead of Sunday's Euro 2016 qualifier in Georgia.

The world champions host the Socceroos in Kaiserslautern with freshly-crowned Asian Cup-winners Australia looking to emulate their 2011 shock 2-1 win over Germany.

Loew will be without world-class goalkeeper Manuel Neuer, who has an infection in the meniscus in his knee, but welcomes back captain Bastian Schweinsteiger, midfielder Ilkay Gundogan and Holger Badstuber after long-term injuries.

The world champions are bedding in a three-man defence and Loew is fielding a 3-4-3 formation having won Brazil 2014 with a 4-2-3-1 line-up.

Germany are eager to see off Australia in style before Sunday's qualifier away to Georgia with Loew's side joint second in their group after losing to leaders Poland last October before drawing at home with Ireland.

"We want to have the necessary fire against Australia ahead of Sunday's match," said Loew, whose side face crucial qualifiers against Poland, Scotland and Ireland in September and October.

"It shows the strength of the Australians that they have beaten teams like Japan and South Korea and they will be a good test for our up-and-coming matches.

"The Australians never give up and they play like teams such as Scotland and Ireland, which is important for us.

"They have changed their style since 2010, previously they were very defensive, very British and relied on long balls, but now they build from the back and counter-attack well."

Bayern Munich's Schweinsteiger, who will partner Gundogan in the defensive midfield, said the Socceroos will be a good test for the world champions.

"They are unpleasant to play against. Physically and tactically they are strong and they were improving even before they won the Asian Cup, so it will be a very good test for us," said Schweinsteiger.

Both Loew and Schweinsteiger said picking up three points in Tbilisi is the priority, but a full-strength side is expected to face Australia.

"We want to ensure that all players are in good physical and mental condition for Sunday," said Loew.

"Basically, I'm planning that Holger Badstuber and Ilkay Gundogan will definitely play.

"Our personnel situation is different to how it was after the World Cup, with Schweinsteiger, Marco Reus, Gundogan and Badstuber back, so we have more options now than directly after the World Cup.

"We have had a long break and we're in the unusual situation of not being top of our group after only picking up one point from a possible six in our first games.

"It's important to win our next few games because we have a hot autumn against Ireland, Scotland and Poland."
