Shock promotion for minnows Carpi

Carpi FC 1909's 0-0 draw against Bari on Tuesday sent the modest Serie B outfit into Italy's top division for the first time in their history.

Just 15 years after facing complete extinction, Carpi ended a 100-year wait for the city of 65.000 people located near Modena, and can now look forward to facing the likes of Serie A giants Juventus, Lazio and Inter Milan next season.

With four games to go, the side from Emilia-Romagna in northern Italy, whose most notable former player is world champion and ex-Everton defender Marco Materazzi, can not be caught by third-ranked Bologna, 12 points behind.

Carpi, who topped the table for most of the season, made Serie B for the first time in their history just two years ago.
