England captain Wayne Rooney is a major doubt for Friday's Euro 2016 qualifier at home to Estonia after he missed training for the third day running due to an ankle injury.

The Manchester United striker picked up the knock in United's 3-0 defeat at Arsenal in the Premier League on Sunday.

Rooney will remain with the England squad this week but it remains to be seen whether he will travel to Lithuania for the Three Lions' final qualifier next Monday.

Arsenal's Theo Walcott is the most likely replacement up front, especially as Danny Ings is also set to miss the Estonia encounter.

The Liverpool striker is in the England squad for the first time but again sat out training on Thursday with an ankle complaint.

Rooney is expected to attend Friday's game against Estonia, even if he is not fit to be included in the squad, in order to collect his commemorative golden boot for breaking Bobby Charlton's scoring record.

Rooney eclipsed Charlton's 49-goal mark with a penalty in a 2-0 win against Switzerland last month and will be presented with the boot by the 1966 World Cup winner before kick-off.

England have already qualified for next year's finals in France, having recorded eight wins from eight matches so far in Group E.
