Rummenigge backs Inter, 31 years after famous Juve brace

Karl Heinz Rummenigge has backed Inter Milan to beat Juventus to the scudetto, over three decades after the West Germany legend scored his first goals for the club in a famous win over the Turin giants.

Rummenigge, now the CEO of Bayern Munich, spent three seasons with Inter from 1984-1987, breaking his Nerazzurri duck with a brace of goals in a 4-0 rout of the Bianconeri in November 1984.

Inter, who sit two points behind Serie A leaders Fiorentina, host Juventus on Sunday looking to maintain their promising start to the campaign and complicate matters further for Massimiliano Allegri's visitors, who sit 10 points off the pace.

Rummenigge never did win a league title with Inter, but 'King Kalle' won the hearts of fans during Inter's one-sided win over Juve 31 years ago.

Given Juve's status at that time -- France's Michel Platini won the Ballon d'Or title three years in succession (1983, 1984 and 1985) -- it was no mean feat.

In an interview with www.inter.it, Rummenigge joked: "The day after the match, we joked that they should change to Milan telephone code to 4-0 rather than 0-2!

"Juventus were always big rivals of ours. That was an important match because they were my first goals as an Inter player.

"Lining up for the Bianconeri was a certain Michel Platini, so there was plenty of motivation.

"It was a great match and there was an amazing atmosphere inside San Siro. We got off to a good start and put in an exceptional performance."

Juventus may have recovered from their disastrous start to this campaign, but Roberto Mancini's men will be hoping for similar success at the San Siro on Sunday.

Rummenigge, meanwhile, believes Inter men can bury the mediocrity of the past few seasons because Mancini has recruited "better" players.

"I hope Inter do well because the results haven't been positive in the last few years. Mancini deserves great respect and has done a very good job with the team," said Rummenigge.

"We (Bayern Munich) played Inter during the pre-season tour of China and you could see then that they were already a competitive team capable of fighting for the scudetto.

"... the most important thing this year is that Inter have much better individual players than in recent seasons.

"This year, the squad is full of players capable of making a difference in every single match and that's a big plus for the team."
