Eder in seventh heaven as Samp sink Verona

Sampdoria and Italy striker Eder rounded off a 4-1 win over hapless Verona with a second-half goal that pushed him top of the Serie A scoring charts on Sunday.

Eder has now hit seven goals in nine games this season, one more than Napoli pair Lorenzo Insigne and Gonzalo Higuain ahead of their match later away to Chievo.

Verona have struggled to keep pace without the services of veteran striker Luca Toni, who is still recovering from injury, and remain the only team in Italy's top flight without a win.

Sampdoria were on the hunt for their first win in four games and capitalised on Verona's woes to move up to seventh place, four points behind leaders Fiorentina, before Sunday's remaining fixtures.

"That's 14 points in nine games," said Samp coach Walter Zenga.

"It wasn't and easy game. Verona have played some good games at home and away, but we fully deserved the win."

Luis Muriel got Walter Zenga's hosts off the mark after just 11 minutes when he pounced from close range to beat Rafael as Verona struggled to clear.

It was the first goal Verona had conceded in the first half of a game all season, but before the half hour Ervin Zukanovic doubled Samp's lead with a diving header from Roberto Soriano's cross from the left.

Soriano all but wrapped up the points at the Luigi Ferraris stadium when he latched on to Eder's superb chip to volley past Rafael after springing the offside trap on the stroke of half-time.

Eder finally grabbed one of his own 10 minutes after the restart, the Brazil-born Italy international nodding home from Muriel's cross after he had dispossessed Emil Hallfredsson.

Verona scored a late consolation when Artur Ionita nodded past Emiliano Viviano in the Samp net in the 75th minute from Luca Siligardi's corner.

Verona, with five draws and four defeats, remain second from bottom of Serie A, on the same points as basement side Carpi.

Verona coach Andrea Mandorlini said "all the responsibility" for the club's situation "is mine" and admitted the club were starting to worry.

"They bossed us today," Mandorlini told Sky Sport. "It seemed like a balanced game but things aren't going as we'd like them to right now.

"Our league position says it all, we're a little bit preoccupied and you can see that on the pitch."

Later Sunday, Roma will go top of the table with a win away to Fiorentina while stuttering champions Juventus host Atalanta in Turin.
