Blackburn appoint Lambert as new manager

Paul Lambert has been appointed the new manager of Blackburn Rovers, the English Championship team said on Sunday.

The former Aston Villa and Norwich City boss will be officially presented to the media on Monday.

"After a short period out of the game, I feel refreshed and I am really looking forward to the challenge ahead," said Lambert, a former Scotland international midfielder who also won the Champions League with Borussia Dortmund in 1997.

Gary Bowyer was sacked from the Rovers hot seat earlier this week with the side languishing down in 16th place, only four points above the relegation zone.

Former Blackburn captain Tim Sherwood, who was sacked by Villa last month, had also been rumoured to be in the running.

Lambert, 46, was fired by Villa in February, with Sherwood succeeding him.

He led Norwich to the League One title in 2010 and the next season took them up to the Premier League. He left a year later to join Villa.
