Germany's Herrmann faces Euro 2016 fitness race

Germany winger Patrick Herrmann has kept alive his slim chances of playing in next June's European Championships after revealing on Wednesday he has decided against a knee operation.

The 24-year-old has been receiving treatment for the last two months after tearing the cruciate ligament in his left knee in September.

But after consulting with doctors the Borussia Moenchengladbach forward has opted against an operation which would rule him out for nine months -- plus Euro 2016, which starts next June -- and will be treated conservatively to keep his hopes of playing in France alive.

But it means there is no fixed date for his return and the chance remains that he may not play again this season.

"After close consultation with the doctors, the decision has been taken to dispense with an operation," said Herrmann.

"So I will now continue on my rehabilitation work for my comeback."

Herrmann won the first of his two caps for the world champions earlier this season and is one of the rising stars of the Bundesliga after helping Gladbach finish third in the table last season to qualify for the Champions League.
