Hamren to step down after Euro 2016

Sweden coach Erik Hamren will stand down from his position after the Euro 2016 tournament, the Swedish Football Association announced Monday.

"He told us that he was quitting," Swedish FA vice chairman Lars-Christer Olsson told state broadcaster SVT.

Several names have been mentioned as potential replacements such as Helsingborgs manager Henrik Larsson, the under-21 national team's coach Hakan Ericson and IFK Goteborg coach Jorgen Lennartsson.

Last year Sweden defeated Denmark in a play-off to seal their place at the Euro 2016 finals in France, but the team's past performances are believed to have taken a negative toll on Hamren.

"This would be the right time to stop, he did not give the impression that he was content and happy during his time at the helm," said sports commentator Olof Lundh from the Swedish tabloid Expressen.

Hamren took over the reins of the national team in 2009 from Lars Lagerback, who had stepped down after Sweden failed to qualify for the World Cup in South Africa.

Hamren had previously coached Norwegian team Rosenborg to the league title in his first full season with the club.

In charge of Sweden he famously persuaded star striker Zlatan Ibrahimovic to return to the national team after an absence of nearly a year.

Together they took Sweden to Euro 2012, and although they were knocked out in the group stages, the team defeated France for the first time since 1969 in their final match.

But in 2014 Hamren was criticised as Sweden failed to make the World Cup, before his team performed worse than expected in Euro 2016 qualifying and ended up third in their group behind Austria and Russia.
