Former Tottenham manager Harry Redknapp is in talks with Derby County over joining the Championship club's backroom staff in an advisory role.

Redknapp is expected to move to the iPro Stadium to provide some much-needed experience for young manager Darren Wassall, who replaced the sacked Paul Clement last month.

Wassall, who is in charge only until the end of the season, is in his first managerial role and has already lost three of his seven league games in charge, leaving Derby in danger of missing out on a play-off place as they battle for promotion to the Premier League.

"Derby County can confirm that discussions have been held with Harry Redknapp regarding the possibility of working in an advisory role until the end of the season," a Derby statement read.

"This would potentially provide support to Darren Wassall and the rest of the coaching team."

Derby are fifth in the Championship, six points adrift of the automatic promotion places, after squandering a 3-0 lead in the last seven minutes at Rotherham to draw 3-3 on Saturday.

Redknapp's last role in club management was at QPR, but he left Loftus Road in February 2015 citing his need to have knee replacement surgery.

The former West Ham and Southampton boss won the FA Cup with Portsmouth in 2008 and guided Tottenham into the Champions League for the first time in 2010.

Redknapp infamously missed out on the England manager's job when he was widely regarded as the favourite to succeed Fabio Capello, but instead saw Roy Hodgson appointed ahead of Euro 2012.
