CSKA beat Kuban to regain lead in Russia

CSKA Moscow reclaimed top spot in the Russian Premier League with a 2-0 win at home to Kuban Krasnodar on Saturday.

A brace from Nigerian striker Ahmed Musa steered CSKA to a confident win and saw them return to first place, two points ahead of second-placed Rostov.

Spartak Moscow sit seven points off the top in third after thrashing lowly Anzhi Makhachkala 4-0 on Friday.

"I'm very pleased both with the result and my team's performance today," CSKA manager Leonid Slutsky said.

"We showed quality football both in attack and especially in defence."

CSKA looked in command from the kick-off and Musa nudged them into a 21st-minute lead when he converted a rebound after Vasily Berezutsky's header came back off the woodwork.

Musa netted his second of the match with nine minutes to go when he converted a cross from Alan Dzagoev to secure the three points for CSKA.

Elsewhere, Terek Grozny missed a chance to go third as they were held to a 1-1 draw by visiting Ural Yekaterinburg.

Denis Dorozhkin put Ural 1-0 up in the 19th minute as he headed in Alexander Dantsev's left-wing cross.

But Terek skipper Oleg Ivanov levelled in the 33rd minute when he hammered home from eight yards out, although Terek head coach Rashid Rakhimov was upset his side couldn't find a winner.

"The draw is definitely not the result that we expected to achieve in this match," he said.

"In the second half we created plenty of chances but squandered them all, lacking aggressiveness and concentration in front of goal. It's very annoying to lose points when you dominate the match completely."

Earlier, Dynamo Moscow beat Ufa 1-0 courtesy of a goal by Montenegro international forward Fatos Beciraj to end their five-match winless streak.
