Wolfsburg held by Mainz before key Real clash

Wolfsburg warmed up for their crunch Champions League quarter-final, second-leg, clash at Real Madrid on Tuesday with a 1-1 draw with Mainz as coach Dieter Hecking rested several stars.

Andre Schuerrle's second-half goal was cancelled out by an equaliser from Mainz's Spanish midfielder Jairo at home and the result leaves Wolfsburg eighth in Germany's top flight.

But Wolfsburg are dreaming of a place in the Champions League semi-finals on their debut season in the knock-out stages after stunning Real with a 2-0 first-leg win last Wednesday.

Goals by Ricardo Rodriguez and Maximilian Arnold inside the first 25 minutes mean that Wolfsburg fly to Spain with a good chance of making the last four as Real need to score three goals at Madrid's Santiago Bernabeu stadium to go through.

Against Mainz, Hecking left goalkeeper and captain Diego Benaglio, attacking midfielder Julian Draxler, plus wing-backs Vieirinha and Rodriguez, out of his starting line-up.

Arnold played the first 67 minutes and Rodriguez came on with ten minutes left to make sure both had plenty of running in their legs for the Madrid showdown.

Having set up Arnold's stunning second goal against Real, Brazilian winger Bruno Henrique again put in a good assist as his final pass allowed Schuerrle to fire home on 53 minutes before the equaliser came 13 minutes later.

Wolfsburg finished with 10 men when Brazilian defender Dante was sent off for a second yellow card in injury time.

Zinadine Zidane's Real roared back from their shock defeat in Germany with a 4-0 thrashing of Eibar on Saturday in the Spanish league.

Cristiano Ronaldo, who scored and put in two assists, was only one of three players retained from the team which lost at Wolfsburg.
