Evergreen Pizarro, 37, extends Bremen deal

Evergreen striker Claudio Pizarro has signed a year's contract extension at Werder Bremen, it was announced on Tuesday, which means he will be playing Bundesliga football past his 38th birthday.

The Peru striker has extended his contact until June 2017 having become Bremen's all-time top scorer earlier this season, and has scored 103 goals in 187 league games for the north German club.

Pizarro only helped Bremen avoid relegation with a last-gasp 1-0 win at home to Eintracht Frankfurt on Saturday.

It was Pizarro's header which led to Papy Djilobodji's dramatic 88th-minute winner against Frankfurt which kept Bremen up

Pizarro will turn 38 in October and has said his ambition is to play for Peru at the 2018 World Cup in Russia.

"I feel good and am pleased that I am able to play another season for this special club," the Peru international told Werder.tv.

"It's been a difficult, but really great year for me."

Having also played for Bayern Munich and Chelsea, Pizarro is in his third stint with Bremen after he re-joined Werder at the start of the 2015/16 season.

He was their top scorer last season with 14 goals in Germany's top flight.

"We're pleased that Claudio will be a part of this team next season, as one of our leading players, with his experience and way of doing things," said Bremen's director of sport Thomas Eichin.
