Van Aanholt rewarded by Sunderland with new contract

Dutch international defender Patrick van Aanholt's solid performances in preserving Sunderland's Premier League status earned him a new four-year contract on Wednesday.

Sunderland manager Sam Allardyce said the 24-year-old -- who joined Sunderland in 2014 from rivals Chelsea after failing to establish himself there -- fully deserved the new contract which commits him to the club till 2020.

"Patrick was an outstanding performer last season, contributing not only solid defensive performances, but also assists and vital goals," said Allardyce of the left back who scored four of his five goals for the club last term.

"It is fantastic to be able to secure the long-term services of such a talented footballer and athlete, who will hopefully continue to improve here for many years to come."

Sunderland escaped relegation, after a fourth successive battle against the drop, at the expense of their bitter north east rivals Newcastle finishing two points better off than them.
