Celtic boss winds up Rangers ahead of Old Firm clash

Celtic manager Brendan Rodgers tried to shift the burden of pressure onto Rangers by insisting Sunday's Old Firm derby is a must-win game for his side's bitter rivals.

Rodgers's reigning Scottish champions will make the journey across Glasgow to Ibrox six points clear at the top of the table of arch-rivals Rangers.

Celtic also have a game in hand over Rangers as they look to complete a second successive domestic treble but a win for the hosts on Sunday would cut the gap to just three points.

Rangers won the last of their record 54 Scottish championships in 2011, with Celtic's iron grip on the title in all the years since strengthened by a financial crisis at Ibrox that saw the Gers demoted to the bottom tier of the professional game in Scotland for breaching league regulations before working their way back to the top flight.

There is an argument to say Celtic have more to lose this weekend but former Liverpool manager Rodgers, who has not lost in eight games against Rangers since taking over in 2016 and has won three out of three at Ibrox, was having none of it.

"We want to win the game and we will focus very much on our performance," he told reporters at his pre-match news conference on Friday.

"Rangers need to win the game and that's the difference, there is a different psychology going into it, in relation to that.

"For them, they must win the game," the Northern Irish manager insisted.
