Bournemouth manager Eddie Howe was furious after defender Steve Cook was hit by a coin thrown by a Millwall fan during the Cherries' 5-2 win at the Goldsands Stadium.

A large section of the 1,378 travelling Millwall supporters took exception to goal celebrations led by their former forward Lewis Grabban, who scored Bournemouth's fourth goal from the penalty spot on Saturday.

Coins were thrown towards the Bournemouth players, with one hitting Cook, who needed lengthy treatment but was able to resume as Bournemouth came back from 2-0 down to clinch their fifth win of the season.

Police moved in to prevent any further trouble as Lions fans threatened to spill onto the pitch.

"There is no way the players deserve to have things thrown at them. This is a family club, it should not have happened and I hope it does not happen again," Howe said.

"Crowds can shout what they like and Lewis was doing nothing untoward after scoring his goal. Football is an emotional game and I can understand the celebrations.

"We showed great character to comeback from being two goals down."

Burnley boss Sean Dyche believes his side can compete with anything the Championship has to offer after they saw off promotion rivals Reading 2-1 to remain top of the table.

Danny Ings struck in the first half, his seventh league goal of the season, before Sam Vokes doubled the hosts' advantage with his fifth in four Championship games late on.

Jason Shackell's own goal with eight minutes remaining set nerves jangling at Turf Moor, but the Clarets held on to earn their fifth league win in a row which represents their best start to a season since 1961.

"I thought we were absolutely excellent," said Dyche. "We are still a work in progress but we went into the game with a good focus and we produced a really good performance.

"We showed we can compete against everyone and we are in a magnificent position to do that in every game we play."

QPR remain hot on Burnley's heels in second place after a 2-0 win over bottom of the table Barnsley at Loftus Road.

Harry Redknapp's team are behind Burnley only on goal difference after setting a new club record by keeping an eighth consecutive clean sheet.

Charlie Austin scored from close range after being set up by substitute Junior Hoilett as QPR finally broke Barnsley's resistance in the 66th minute.

And Austin sealed the points for unbeaten QPR five minutes from the end when he slotted home from the penalty spot.

"It was important to us to keep the run going. We didn't want to give a goal away," QPR assistant manager Kevin Bond said of his team's defensive record.

"It's fantastic and it's not just down to the obvious players like the defence and the goalkeeper. It's testament to everyone really."

Third placed Leicester lost for just the second time in the league this season as an own-goal from goalkeeper Kasper Schmeichel condemned Nigel Pearson's men to a 1-0 defeat at Doncaster.

Schmeichel, the son of Manchester United legend Peter, inexplicably punched a corner into his own net in the 17th minute.

Czech Republic defender Daniel Pudil capped Watford's fightback as Gianfranco Zola's team won 2-1 at Huddersfield.

Elsewhere, Derby, with former England manager Steve McClaren in charge for the first time, beat Leeds 3-1 at Pride Park.

Bolton moved out of the relegation zone after securing a 2-1 victory at Birmingham for their first league win of the season.

Sheffield Wednesday are still waiting for their first win of the campaign after drawing 1-1 at home with Ipswich.

Meanwhile, Middlesbrough thrashed Yeovil 4-1 and Blackpool drew 0-0 at Charlton.
