Colorado Rapids midfielder Dillon Powers, a 22-year-old American who netted five goals this past season, was named the 2013 Major League Soccer Rookie of the Year on Monday.

Powers started 29 matches and logged 2,457 minutes for the Rapids and outpolled teammate Deshorn Brown, a Jamaican who led Colorado with 10 goals, and Seattle defender DeAndre Yedlin in voting by a media panel for the award.

Powers was the first Colorado player to capture top rookie honors.

Liberian midfielder Darlington Nagbe of the Portland Timbers was named the MLS Fair Play Award winner. He made only eight fouls and received just one yellow card in 2,848 minutes over 34 starts, in addition to netting nine goals for the Western Conference playoff runners-up.

The Los Angeles Galaxy took the MLS Team Fair Play Award for the first time, having the third-lowest number of fouls of any squad at 386 with a league-low 36 yellow cards and only one red card this season.
