Endgame Summary:
Costa Rica manages to gain a surprise success! Although it was initially Uruguay trying to control the game, more and more the Ticos were able to get themselves into promising offensive situations. It was namely Joel Campbell who was involved in almost every attack, the 21-year-old clearly stood out among his team. It was also him who scored the equalizer ten minutes after halftime and it only took three additional minutes for Costa Rica to turn the score to their favor. Prior to this Cavani had converted a penalty in the first half, but later on Uruguay decreasingly managed to get near the opposition's goal. Finally the well-deserved 3-1 for the underdog sealed the defeat for La Celeste, who enter the tournament with a upset.

Full-Time
90'
Maxi Pereira (Uruguay) is sent off
Oh, is this really a red card? Maxi Pereira is apprently trying to get the ball from Campbell, but instead he entirely misses the ball and hits his opponent's leg badly. After that, a mass confrontation forms, but Brych can calm the players down. Although the culprit apologizes to his victim, he's sent off. This decision is understandable, but still a little bit too hard.
90'
The ref gives Uruguay five minutes of injury time! But no one really knows why, there haven't been many interruptions in this game.
89'
That's the last substitution of the game: Bolaños goes off and Barrantes is now on the pitch for the remaining minutes.
89'
Substitution (in) Costa Rica -> Michael Barrantes
89'
Substitution (out) Costa Rica -> Christian Bolaños
86'
Understandably Uruguay are quite shocked and now sure look like loosers. Costa Rica on the contrary look very confident right now.
84'
Goooal for Costa Rica, 1:3 by Marcos Ureña
Unbelievable! Ureña just came on the pitch a minute ago and probably scores the winning goal! Campbell plays a through ball onto the right hand side, where the substitute finds himself alone and runs to the right corner of the six-yard-box. There the Kuban Krasnodar striker can defeat Muslera with a perfect low shot into the near corner of the goal.
83'
Jorge Pinto makes his second substitution, Ruiz is replaced by Ureña.
83'
Substitution (in) Costa Rica -> Marcos Ureña
83'
Substitution (out) Costa Rica -> Bryan Ruiz
81'
Martín Cáceres (Uruguay) is shown a yellow card
Oh, that's a really bad foul! Cáceres jumps right into the legs of Gamboa and hits his opponent with this tackle. Obviously, German referee Dr. Felix Brych at least has to book the Juventus defender.
79'
Of course, by now the game only goes in one direction. La Celeste are trying to find a way through, but Costa Rica's defense can keep away any kind of danger so far.
76'
While Pinto replaces Tejeda with Cubero to reinforce the Costa Rican defense, Tabárez uses his third and final substitution. But it's not Suárez coming on the pitch, but rather Hernández taking over for Rodríguez.
76'
Substitution (in) Uruguay -> Abel Hernández
76'
Substitution (out) Uruguay -> Cristian Rodríguez
74'
Substitution (in) Costa Rica -> José Cubero
74'
Substitution (out) Costa Rica -> Yeltsin Tejeda
73'
More and more, Uruguay are taking over control while Costa Rica has some difficulties to get the ball out of their penalty area. It's truely a thrilling phase of this game!
70'
The corner swings in from the right hand side and is followed by a header from Cavani, but Navas reacts with a great save!
69'
Wow! Cavani plays a one-two on the left border of the box and is able to cross the ball in front of the goal. Navas can't reach the ball, but Díaz makes a clearance. The game continues with a corner.
67'
That's really commendable! La Sele defend their lead with great commitment, Uruguay still can't get a hold of the ball. Will the Ticos manage to have a surprise victory?
64'
What a nice effort this is! Campbell seems to like wide-range shots, this time the ball almost goes exactly into the top left corner of the goal, but the attempt from about 35 metres misses the post.
63'
Can the Ticos maintain their lead? Despite of what you would expect, they continue to play offensively.
60'
Tabárez makes two substitutions, but leaves Suárez on the bench. Forlán and Gargano are going off the pitch and will be replaced by Lodeiro and González.
60'
Substitution (in) Uruguay -> Álvaro González
60'
Substitution (out) Uruguay -> Walter Gargano
60'
Substitution (in) Uruguay -> Nicolás Lodeiro
60'
Substitution (out) Uruguay -> Diego Forlán
60'
One has to say, Costa Rica kinda have earned this, they are at least on a par with Uruguay since the game started.
57'
Goooal for Costa Rica, 1:2 by Óscar Duarte
This time he scores! Bolaños crosses the ball right in front of the left post, where Duarte appears again. This time he uses his foot instead of heading and the defender is successful in scoring the lead for his team!
56'
Walter Gargano (Uruguay) is shown a yellow card
Gargano pushes Ruiz away and is booked for playing too rough.
54'
Goooal for Costa Rica, 1:1 by Joel Campbell
Finally, he rewards himself for his efforts! Ruiz passes the ball with his heel onto the right wing and the following cross comes to Campbell. The 21-year-old finishes with a strong left footed shot into the middle of the net.
51'
Duarte almost scores the equalizer! The free-kick is crossed to the left post, where the defender fails to overcome Muslera. The goalie can block the header and Duarte's second attempt goes far off target.
50'
Diego Lugano (Uruguay) is shown a yellow card
Lugano doesn't find the right timing for his challenge, hitting Campbell's ankle with his tackle from behind. Consequently the culprit is booked.
48'
Costa Rica pressure their opponents right from the beginning, so La Sele continues to play offensively and look quite bold.
46'
Play resumes without any substitutions.
46'
Second Half begins

Halftime Summary:
The half-time result may be as expected, but the game wasn't. Though La Celeste tried to gain control of the ball at the beginning, Costa Rica could break through their defensive line over and over. Especially Campbell caused many problems for the Uruguayan defenders. However, the Ticos' defense didn't prove very reliable for a bunch of times, so Los Charrúas had some scoring opportunities. So all in all it was a pretty balanced game so far. Eventually Díaz caused a penalty for the Celeste right at the middle of the first half and Cavani was able to convert. But if Uruguay want to live up to their role as favourtites, they have to improve in the second half.
45'
Half-Time
44'
That's a magnificent save by Navas! Forlan's attempt from the left border of the penalty box is deflected and goes down as a sliced shot at the wide corner of the goal. But the Costa Rican goalkeeper can prevent the ball from going into the net.
42'
This could've been the equalizer! Bolaños makes a corner kick from the left hand side and González tries to score with a diving header. But the defender misses the ball.
39'
Since the game doesn't offer many highlights, the crowd starts to create their own spectacle with mexican waves. At least the atmosphere is good.
36'
Campbell tries to get a rebound under control, but Lugano and Godín can stpo him from doing so with a collective effort.
34'
Costa Rica stand out with several rough challenges, preventing the Celeste from creating dangerous chances. Uruguay don't seem to be able to deal with it.
31'
La Sele have two corner kicks in a row, but Bolaños' crosses don't do the trick. Still, Uruguay can't regain control since they scored the leading goal.
29'
The Ticos don't give up, but are rather looking to reinforce their offensive efforts. That's the proper reaction to the 0-1 deficit!
27'
Campbell is really making a good impression so far! He has a long-range effort from about 30 metres and his shot goes just past the right post.
24'
Goooal for Uruguay, 1:0 by Edinson Cavani
Cavani scores the lead! His shot to the lower right corner of the goal is to precise, Navas can't reach it despite jumping into the right direction.
22'
Uruguay have a penalty! After a long cross from the left hand side, Júnior Díaz clings to Godín and overthrows the Atletico Madrid centre-back. So the Mainz 05 defender clearly fouls his opponent.
19'
Again and again, the underdog is looking for a way to invade Uruguay's penalty area. The Ticos are doing quite well at occupying the Celeste in their half.
17'
Cavani has an attempt from the right hand side of the box. But his shot goes well off target.
15'
Goooal for Uruguay... or maybe not? Godín jumps right into Lugano's wide cross from the left wing and scores. But he's offside, so the goal doesn't count.
12'
The Ticos have their first corner and the cross from the left hand side looks promising, but Ruiz' header goes over the bar.
9'
Again it's Campbell carrying the ball in front of the opposition's box, the 21-year-old shows some nice skills and can maintain possession. Consequently he passes the ball to the left and Bolaños loses the it immediately.
7'
Wow, that could have ended badly! Borges looses the ball in his team's own penalty box, but Arévalo can't profit from this. His shot is saved by Navas.
6'
Unsurprisingly Uruguay takes over control on the pitch, but they can't generate any shooting opportunities yet. Most of the time the ball stays in midfield.
4'
González is demanding a yellow card for Stuani after the Uruguayan attacks him on the right hand side near the Ticos' penalty box. Usually this would mean a booking for the defender, but he's being in the right!
2'
That's a first impression of Campbell, who's rushing to the left wing and trying to center the ball. But he can't find a recipient for his cross.

Kick-Off
Both nations played eight matches against each other so far. Uruguay won six times, besides the teams drawed twice. So the Ticos are waiting for their first win against the Celeste.
Costa Rica on the other hand were second in their CONCACAF qualifying group, so the Ticos finished in front of teams like Honduras and Mexico. Still, Jorge Pinto's team could only win one of their five friendlies in 2014, namely beating Paraguay with 2-1.
After being reaching only fifth place in the South American WC qualifying, Uruguay had to go into relegation against Jordan, but had a walk-over. With a 5-0 away win and a 0-0 draw at home, the Celeste qualified easily for the world cup. They also had some good friendly matches in this year, drawing with Australia (1-1) and winning against Northern Ireland (1-0) and Slovenia (2-0).
Likewise, the Charrúas are aware of the problems resulting from being the favourites, as Galatasaray Istanbul goalie Fernando Muslera said: "We have the ability to go far, but we don't want to assume the role of favourites because it has never suited us well. The first game is always difficult. A good result takes a weight off your shoulders and allows you to look forward."
For Premier League fans, Bryan Ruiz probably is the most common name in Costa Rica's roster. The 28 year old offensive midfielder plays for Fulham FC since 2011, but was loaned to PSV Eindhoven in the past six months. Costa Rica's skipper sounded rather confident at the press conference: "Everything is ready for Saturday. We know what the team will be, the tactics we will use and also what we have to do during the game. There is a lot of motivation and, despite knowing that a point would be good, we don't want to settle and we will look for the three points."
Costa Rica don't exactly have a star player like their opponents, still one could mention Joel Campbell as one of the more promising players. The 21-year-old was signed in 2011 by Arsenal FC, but didn't make a Premier League appearance since then. Instead he was loaned out to European teams like FC Lorient, Real Betis Sevilla and most recently Olympiacos FC. The striker scored a great goal at the Greek's astonishing 2-0 win against Manchester United in the past Champions League season.
After having knee surgery, the attacker recently participated in his teams training session on thursday, as his coach stated on friday: "Yesterday afternoon Suarez did the most important thing in training, which is play football." Still, Oscar Tabárez didn't want to risk letting his star play to soon: "We don't want to pressure him in any way, though, we have prepared for this game without Luis. We are very happy with his recovery, but we need to be cautious." Diego Forlán will be starting in his place today.
The Liverpool striker was the top scorer of the past Premier League season, contributing to his teams success with 31 goals out of 33 matches. So naturally, their are several rumors associating the 27-year-old with clubs like Real Madrid. But the highly controversial player - known for biting his opponents amongst other things - won't be in the starting lineup.
Being the first ones to play in group D, Uruguay and Costa Rica are looking for a good start into this world cup. While the Ticos are depicted as the underdog, it is believed that Uruguay could proceed to the next round, competing with Italy and England. After all, La Celeste reached the semifinals at the WC 2010. But it's also players like Luis Suárez getting the hopes of the Uruguayan supporters up.
Azad Derakhshani will provide the live commentary for this match.
