English third tier club Tranmere sacked manager Ronnie Moore on Wednesday, a day after he admitted a Football Association charge of repeatedly breaking betting rules.

Moore was suspended by the north-west club on February 17 after the FA launched an investigation and last week the 61-year-old was charged over "multiple breaches" of betting rules.

After admitting the charge and requesting a personal hearing on Tuesday, the former Rotherham boss has now been told he has been relieved of his duties at Prenton Park.

"Tranmere Rovers Football Club have today (Wednesday) terminated the employment of Ronnie Moore for being in breach of his contract," the club said in a statement.

"Moore has admitted an FA charge regarding multiple breaches of Rule E8(b) for misconduct in relation to betting and requested a personal hearing.

Rovers secretary Mick Horton said: "Tranmere Rovers will not tolerate any action that damages the integrity of this Football Club.

"Any staff members found to be guilty of misconduct will face severe action."

Meanwhile Wednesday also saw the FA propose that, from next season, no one in the top eight divisions of English football be allowed to gamble on matches anywhere in the world.

That would cover the elite Premier League all the way down to the regional divisions of the semi-pro and amateur, Northern, Southern and Isthmian Leagues ('step four' of the FA structure).

The governing FA Council on Wednesday unanimously agreed to the recommendation and the proposed rule will go before the FA's annual general meeting on May 21.

An FA statement issued Wednesday said: "The FA has proposed that from next season, participants at Step 4 and above of the English league system will be banned from betting, either directly or indirectly, on any football match or competition anywhere in the world."

Currently, FA rules state no participant can bet on a match or competition in which they are involved that season, while they are also prohibited from using or passing on inside information.

The FA statement added: "The changes to FA rules from the start of the 2014/15 season would also see a worldwide prohibition on betting on any other football-related matter, for example, the transfer of players, employment of managers or team selection.

"The passing of inside information to somebody that uses the information for betting remains prohibited."

Tottenham and England winger Andros Townsend, Newcastle's Dan Gosling and Cameron Jerome, on loan at Crystal Palace from Stoke, are all Premier League players who have been found to have breached current betting regulations.

FA director of football governance and regulation Darren Bailey said: "The proposed betting rule adjustment to encompass all aspects of world football provides a simple and straightforward message to all participants on where the line is drawn."
