Football: Kiwi international Smeltz leaves Glory for Sydney

New Zealand international Shane Smeltz was snapped up by Sydney FC on Sunday after being released by A-League rivals Perth Glory.

Sydney FC said Smeltz, 32, had signed a one-year contract for the 2014/2015 A-League season.

The Kiwi striker is second on the A-League's all-time leading goalscorers list with 77 goals in 135 games.

He is also a two-time Oceania Footballer of the Year, a Johnny Warren Medal winner and has twice won the A-League's Golden Boot.

"This is the biggest and most renown(ed) club in Australia and it will be an honour to pull on the Sky Blue shirt," Smeltz said in a statement.

"I'm excited to get to work with (new coach) Graham Arnold and to start training with the squad.

"I'm coming here with an expectation that we can win trophies and qualify for the Asian Champions League."

Smeltz, who played in England for three clubs, among them AFC Wimbledon, before returning to the A-League in 2007, has scored 23 goals in 50 internationals for New Zealand.

His triumphs include the goal that earned the All Whites a famous 1-1 draw with Italy at the last World Cup in South Africa in 2010.
