Foster withdraws from England squad

West Bromwich Albion goalkeeper Ben Foster has withdrawn from the England squad due to a thumb injury sustained in training, the Football Association announced on Wednesday.

The 31-year-old's withdrawal means that he will miss England's friendly at home to Norway later on Wednesday and their opening 2016 European Championship qualifier away to Switzerland on Monday.

"England goalkeeper Ben Foster picked up a knock in training on Tuesday and has returned to his club for treatment as a precautionary measure," said a statement from the FA.

"West Bromwich Albion will provide further guidance on Ben Foster. At this time, England manager Roy Hodgson will not call up any replacements."

West Brom said their medical team were assessing the extent of Foster's injury.

"We will spend the next few days letting it settle down and then assess it again, but at this stage we are optimistic it is not a serious problem," director of football administration Richard Garlick told the club website. "It made sense for Ben to take no chances."

Hodgson announced on Tuesday that Manchester City's Joe Hart will start in goal against Norway. New Southampton signing Fraser Forster is the other goalkeeper in the squad.
