Senna finally calls it a day

Marcos Senna, the Brazilian-born playmaker who helped Spain win the European Championships in 2008, will quit football at the end of his current season with the New York Cosmos, the US side announced Wednesday.

Senna, who spent 11 seasons at Villareal in Spain before joining the Cosmos when they were relaunched in 2013, will be 39 when the North American Soccer League season ends in November.

"I've been blessed to have had the career I've had and fortunate to play with some truly exceptional players and teams," Senna said.

Senna started his career in Brazil but made his name with Villareal in Spain and acquired citizenship in 2006 so he could play for the national side. He was part of the Spanish team that beat Italy in the quarter-finals and Germany 1-0 in the final of the 2008 European Championships.

Senna helped the Cosmos win the NASL championship in 2013, their first season after being brought back into competition nearly 30 years after their high profile but failed attempt with Pele to conquer the US soccer market.
