Newcastle remember Srnicek at memorial service

Newcastle United supporters and former players joined friends and family of Pavel Srnicek at a memorial service for the former Newcastle goalkeeper in the city on Wednesday.

Srnicek, who had two spells at Newcastle, died last month aged 47 after suffering a heart attack while out jogging in his native Czech Republic.

Former Newcastle team-mates including Alan Shearer as well as current manager Steve McClaren were among those in attendance at the Parish Church of St Andrew in the shadow of St James' Park.

Ex-Newcastle goalkeeper Steve Harper, mentored by Srnicek from the age of 17, delivered a moving eulogy in which he said: "You loved Newcastle, Pav, but I can assure you that Newcastle loved you.

"It was a privilege to meet you, it was a privilege to learn from you, it was a privilege to know you and call you my friend."

The club had also paid tribute to Srnicek with a minute's applause prior to their 3-3 draw at home to Manchester United in the Premier League on Tuesday.

"It's not surprising, but it's great to see so many old faces here today," said Shearer, Newcastle's all-time record goal-scorer.

"People have come from all over the world, all over the country to be here, and that tells you what a nice, genuine, humble, honest, hard-working professional Pav was. He was great to be around."

Srnicek became a fan favourite during his first stint at Newcastle between 1991 and 1998 and went on to play for clubs including Sheffield Wednesday and Italian side Brescia before returning for a brief spell in 2006.

He also won 49 caps for the Czech Republic.
