Leicester sign Ghana star Amartey

Leicester have signed Ghana international Daniel Amartey from FC Copenhagen for an undisclosed fee, the Premier League title contenders announced on Friday.

Amartey, who can play in central midfield or at right-back, agreed a four and a half year contract with Claudio Ranieri's side.

"It's a great pleasure to join Leicester," said Amartey, who was also believed to have been a target for Liverpool.

"I know the club have been interested in signing me for some time and that was a big part of my decision to come here.

Amartey's arrival, for a reported fee of around £5 million ($7 million), will bolster Ranieri's defensive options as he aims to keep Leicester in contention to win the English title.

The Foxes are second in the table, behind leaders Arsenal on goal difference heading into Saturday's home game against Stoke, and Amartey is relishing the opportunity to join their surprise title bid.

"All over Europe, people are talking about Leicester and how well the club is doing in the Premier League," Amartey added.

"The team plays exciting, attacking football and I'm looking forward to being part of it."

Amartey, who has won six caps for Ghana, will complete his move to the King Power Stadium subject to international and Premier League clearance.

He is Ranieri's second signing of the January transfer window after they brought in winger Demarai Gray from Birmingham.
