Former Netherlands goalkeeper and assistant coach Stanley Menzo has been fired by Ajax Cape Town, who lie second last in the South African Premiership midway through the season.

"After (more than) a year at the helm, Menzo was unable to find consistency from his team," said a club statement released Thursday.

Ajax are two points above bottom club Wits in a league where the last team is relegated and the second last side goes into play-offs with second-tier outfits.

The Cape Town side have won only three of 14 league matches, scored just 10 goals and were eliminated in the first round of the League Cup.

"I believe a change of coach is best for the club as the season reaches a crucial stage," admitted the 54-year-old Suriname-born coach.

Menzo spent most of his playing career at Ajax Amsterdam, helping them win nine Dutch and European titles.

He was capped six times by the Netherlands and coached the goalkeepers when Marco van Basten managed the national team.

Menzo is the fourth foreign coach after Peter Butler of England, Joey Antipas of Zimbabwe and Sammy Troughton of Northern Ireland to be sacked by a Premiership club this season.
