Football: Roar lose, Wanderers go top of A-League

Western Sydney Wanderers went to the top of Australia's A-League after leaders Brisbane Roar lost in Newcastle on Sunday.

An Adam Taggart brace handed the Newcastle Jets a 2-1 win over victory over Roar, while the Wanderers edged out Melbourne Victory 1-0 on Saturday.

The Roar led 1-0 after a dominant first-half performance and a 39th minute goal through Luke Brattan.

But in driving rain the Jets finished the stronger with 51st and 74th minute goals to Taggart.

The Wanderers remained unbeaten following their win over Victory, now coached by Kevin Muscat.

An 82nd minute strike from Mark Bridge proved the difference after Labinot Haliti had fired across the face of goal.

Adelaide United ended their three-match losing run with a 1-1 draw in stifling heat in Perth to deny French international defender William Gallas a winning debut with the Glory.

Adelaide opened the scoring in the 55th minute through a brilliant header from Osama Malik, before the Glory equalised through substitute Chris Harold with a header off a corner.

Sydney FC surged to third after a 2-0 win over a crisis club Melbourne Heart in Melbourne.

The loss adds to the pressure on Heart boss John Aloisi, whose side remain bottom of the table and without a win since February.

Joel Chianese put Sydney ahead in the 27th minute before Alessandro Del Piero converted a penalty to seal Heart's fate.
