Celtic cruise into League Cup semis

John Guidetti scored a hat-trick as Celtic cruised into the last four of the Scottish League Cup with a 6-0 thrashing of 10-man Partick Thistle on Wednesday.

The on-loan Manchester City striker opened the scoring with a 31st-minute free-kick before Thistle's Stuart Bannigan was given a straight red for a foul on the Swedish star.

Emilio Izaguirre started the second-half goal glut in the 48th minute with a goal from a difficult angle before Guidetti got his second of the game in the 52nd minute.

The Hoops striker completed his hat-trick from the penalty spot four minutes later as he converted a spot-kick he had earned himself.

Leigh Griffiths came off the bench for a rare appearance in the 58th minute and took just four minutes to head home Celtic's fifth of the night. The Scottish striker completed the rout in the 68th minute with a shot from close range.

The win sets up a potential Old Firm semi-final clash with fierce rivals Rangers, who clinched their place in Saturday's draw with a 1-0 win over St Johnstone on Tuesday. The Ibrox side, who sit second in the Championship table, knocked out their Premiership opponents thanks to Lewis MacLeod's 86th minute header.

Glasgow giants Celtic and Rangers haven't met since April 2012, when the pair were last competing in the same division. Rangers were then forced to start life again in Scotland's bottom tier after the old company was liquidated the following month.

Joining the Old Firm pair will be holders Aberdeen, who secured a 1-0 win over surprise Scottish Premiership leaders Hamilton at Pittodrie. Adam Rooney dived in to head home a 24th-minute free-kick as the Dons gained revenge for their recent 3-0 defeat at the hands of the same opponents in the league.

Dundee United complete the final four following their hard-fought penalty shoot-out win over Championship side Hibernian at Easter Road after extra time finished 3-3.

United took a 12th-minute lead through a Chris Erskine strike before Dominique Malonga levelled matters just four minutes later.

Aidan Connolly restored United's advantage in the 19th minute as he bundled the ball into the net, but Hibs' second-half pressure paid off when Jason Cummings headed home a 57th-minute equaliser, only for Ryan Dow to put United in front for the third time four minutes later.

Hibs then missed a host of chances before Matthew Kennedy's deflected strike looped past Radoslaw Cierzniak in the 78th minute to send the tie into extra time.

After the additional 30 minutes ended without another goal, both sides scored their opening six penalties apiece until United's captain John Rankin blazed his effort over.

However, he had 'keeper Cierzniak to thank as the Pole saved from Kennedy and David Gray with Conor Townsend converting for United to hand Jackie McNamara's side a 7-6 victory.
