George Lebese was the unexpected two-goal star as Kaizer Chiefs snatched a 2-1 win at AmaZulu Wednesday and stretched their South African Premiership lead to 11 points.

Chiefs' England-born coach Stuart Baxter was about to take off the largely ineffective midfielder when he equalised on the hour in Indian Ocean city Durban.

And Lebese struck four minutes into stoppage time as Chiefs burgled three points against a spirited AmaZulu side that belied their bottom-of-the-table position.

The home team were superior in the opening half at Moses Mabhida Stadium and deservedly went ahead on 22 minutes through South Africa striker Bongani Ndulula.

A drive from Zambian Bornwell Mwape crashed off the post and Chiefs goalkeeper Brilliant Khuzwayo pushed a tame shot from the rebound into the path of Ndulula, who made no mistake.

Zimbabwean substitute Kingston Nkhatha was preparing to come on when Lebese finished off a superb passing movement with a shot past diving goalkeeper Tapuwa Kapini.

A fairy-tale outing for Lebese was completed after 94 minutes when a Siphiwe Tshabalala free-kick came back off the crossbar and the midfielder darted forward to push the ball into the net.

Former South Africa and Finland coach Baxter praised official man of the match Lebese.

"George had a bad first 20 minutes. He was slow and negative and I was about to replace him when he equalised.

"Keeping him on proved a very wise move and he deserved the man-of-the-match award."

While Chiefs made it nine victories in 10 outings, unfashionable Chippa United were the only other top-half side to win and climbed six places to second.

Mhlengi Cele scored one minute from time to give Chippa a 2-1 home victory over Wits University in eastern Cape city Port Elizabeth.

Ajax Cape Town, who began the day second, crumbled 3-0 at Pretoria University with Uganda striker Geoffrey Massa bagging a brace.

Victory ended a six-match winless run by previously goal-shy Pretoria, which had put coach Steve Barker under pressure.

Maritzburg United and defending champions Mamelodi Sundowns each dropped one place to fourth and fifth respectively after being held to goalless draws at home.
