Thompson hat-trick earns draw for Victory

A hat-trick from Archie Thompson earned Melbourne Victory a point in a lively 3-3 A-League draw with Sydney FC on Saturday. The 36-year-old former Socceroo international scored either side of a Marc Janko goal to give Victory a 2-1 half-time lead.

Shane Smeltz's second-half brace gave Sydney a chance to become the first team to beat Victory this season.

But the man who started scoring for Victory 10 seasons ago found the net again to take his team's unbeaten streak to 10 matches.

While Victory stay unbeaten, the draw gives league leaders Perth Glory a three-point break at the top of the standings.

Perth had a 2-0 home win over struggling Newcastle Jets on Friday.

Richard Garcia's 11th-minute strike and an 86th-minute thunderbolt from Nebojsa Marinkovic were enough to seal all three points for Glory.

Newcastle finished the match with 10 men after their Dutch skipper Kew Jaliens was given a straight red in the 82nd minute for a studs-up challenge on Scott Jamieson.

Brisbane Roar had their first significant win under interim Dutch coach Frans Thijssen and farewelled departing premiership captain Matt Smith in style by upsetting Adelaide United 1-0 on their home turf on Friday.

Smith, who signed with Thai Premier League side FC Bangkok Glass this week, had to watch from the bench as Brazilian Henrique's stunning first-half strike was enough to give the Roar their second win in four games under Thijssen.

The Roar skipper eventually entered the game with only a minute to play in regular time to ensure his side held on for three points.

Striker Roy Krishna's late strike earned a dominant Wellington Phoenix side a 1-1 draw against the Central Coast Mariners in Auckland.

Krishna chested down a pass in the 78th minute before sliding the ball past goalkeeper Liam Reddy.

It was the fourth straight game that the Fijian international has found the net and it cancelled out a first-half effort from Matt Simon.

Western Sydney Wanderers match with Melbourne City was pushed to later in the season while the Asian champions take part in this weekend's FIFA World Club Cup in Morocco.
