Wanderers hang on for draw after no-goal controversy

Defending champions Western Sydney Wanderers were fortunate to escape with a 1-1 draw against FC Seoul in their AFC Champions League group match in Sydney on Tuesday.

After a 12th-minute strike from Kerem Bulut for the Wanderers, the Koreans equalised through Go Yo-Han in the 72nd minute.

In a frenetic finish Wanderers goalkeeper Ante Covic appeared on television replays to take the ball over the goal-line.

Both teams had good shouts for penalties in the final minutes, with substitute striker Tomi Juric manhandled to the ground by Cha Du-ri and Wanderers substitute Jason Trifiro appearing to handle the ball in his own penalty area.

The draw kept Western Sydney in second place on goal differential in Group H, behind China's Guangzhou Evergrande but on equal points with FC Seoul with two games left in the pool stage.

"In the first half we should have gone up two or three goals. You have to take your chances at this level, and in the end it was a bit scary, it could have gone either way," said Wanderers coach Tony Popovic.

"In the end we're still second and we move on to the next game."
