England call up Cleverley to replace injured Mason

Everton new-boy Tom Cleverley has been added to the England squad for their forthcoming matches against the Republic of Ireland and Slovenia after Tottenham Hotspur midfielder Ryan Mason withdrew with a knee injury.

Mason sustained the problem while training with the England squad at St George's Park this week and his return to Tottenham for treatment opened up a place in Roy Hodgson's squad that has been filled by Cleverley.

The 25-year-old, who was on loan at Aston Villa last season from Manchester United, has not played for England since November 2013.

He featured in the first nine matches under Hodgson after Euro 2012, but lost his place following a dip in form for United and didn't feature in the squad for last year's World Cup.

Cleverley's call-up comes at a busy time for the midfielder, who signed a five-year deal with Everton on Friday after rejecting an offer from Villa following his release by United at the end of the season.

"Cleverley was very unlucky to miss out on this selection," Hodgson said recently after leaving Cleverley out of his squad for the games in Dublin and Ljubljana.

"He was someone we discussed a lot. We like him, trust him, we can call him up like that if we want. If someone else went down we have Tom up our sleeves."

Cleverley now stands a chance of earning his 14th cap in Sunday's friendly against the Republic or the Euro 2016 qualifier in Slovenia seven days later.
