France whip Mexico to book last 16 berth

France bounced back from their shock defeat to Colombia by whipping Mexico 5-0 to book their last 16 spot at the Women's World Cup on Wednesday.

The French take top spot in Group F with six points, ahead of England who beat Colombia 2-1 in Montreal, and also have six points but are behind on goal difference.

Colombia, ranked 28, are on four points and will also advance out of the group as one of the four best third-placed finishers.

France's Marie Laure Delie scored inside a minute in a first-half goal blitz that saw Eugenie Le Sommer net a double and an own goal by Mexican defender Jennifer Ruiz.

Amandine Henry added a spectacular fifth goal ten minutes from time.

France next play the second-place finisher from Group E -- Costa Rica, Spain or South Korea -- who play their final group games later Wednesday.

Brazil are already assured of finishing top of Group E ahead of their final game against Costa Rica.

The French had been touted as among the pre-tournament favourites but suffered one of the biggest upsets in its 24-year history when they lost 2-0 to Colombia in their second group match.
