Wanderers go top of A-League amid fan boycott

A sublime winner from Mitch Nichols lifted Western Sydney to a 2-1 win over Brisbane Roar, sending them to the top of Australia's A-League on Saturday.

Nichols guided his in-swinging shot past the outstretched Roar goalkeeper Jamie Young just inside the far post for the winner in the 79th minute of a high-level contest.

Mark Bridge put the Wanderers in front in the 29th minute before Jamie Maclaren levelled for Brisbane seven minutes later.

It was the Wanderers' sixth consecutive win and they are in top place in the standings for the the first time since round six in the club's second season in 2013/14.

The continuing fan boycott across all A-League games this weekend restricted Western Sydney's crowd to 9,860 with the 2014 Asian Champion League winners' "Red and Black Bloc" supporters following through with their threat to boycott the game due to grievances with Football Federation Australia (FFA).

The FFA is facing a fan revolt amid fury over the publication of a confidential list of supporters banned from stadiums across the country.

Anger over a perceived privacy breach flared when Sydney's Sunday Telegraph published the names and photos of 198 banned A-League fans last week, labelling some as "louts" while lashing out at spectator conduct.

The discontent quickly morphed into a backlash against the FFA with supporters condemning its failure to defend fans over what it saw as biased media coverage and for being out of touch with grassroots supporters of the game.
