Effenberg sacked as Paderborn coach

Former Germany international Stefan Effenberg has been sacked as coach of Paderborn after a run of 12 games without a win, the German second-division side announced on Thursday.

Effenberg, 47, was dismissed just five months into the job after taking charge in his first managerial role in October, but Tuesday's 0-0 draw at Karlsruher left Paderborn in 17th place, five points from safety.

Paderborn "have ended their partnership with...Stefan Effenberg," read a brief statement on the club's website, with German daily Bild reporting that academy coach Rene Mueller will replace the ex-Bayern Munich star.

Effenberg won three Bundesliga titles as well as the 2001 Champions League as a player with Bayern, but the controversial midfielder was sent home from the 1994 World Cup after falling out with national team coach Berti Vogts.
