Greek government postpones Greek Cup final

The Greek government Friday postponed the Greek Cup final between Olympiakos and AEK scheduled for Saturday due to lack of proper security for the match.

"By decision of Deputy Sports Minister Stavros Kontonis, the Greek Cup final is postponed at the request of the Greek police and the Standing Committee Against Violence," an announcement from Kontonis' office said.

Because of the 48-hour strike action throughout Greece starting Saturday by labour unions, the Greek police were unable to provide enough protection for the contest.

The final was to be played without spectators after Kontonis had agreed under pressure from FIFA and UEFA to continue the Greek Cup competition after he had announced its cancellation in March following violence in a semi-final match.

Greek media reported that Kontonis' latest decision to call off the final was also sparked by the Greek federation's decision to change at the last moment the linesmen for the contest, ignoring a previous agreement between Kontonis and the FA as to who would officiate in the final at the Athens Olympic Stadium.
