Roma loan Doumbia to Sporting

Troublesome Roma striker Seydou Doumbia was sent to Sporting Lisbon on a one-year loan deal on Friday.

Doumbia signed for Roma in January 2015, sparking excitement among fans following a solid five-year spell at CSKA Moscow, but fell quickly out of favour following a series of disappointing performances.

The 29-year-old Ivorian returned to CSKA on loan in August 2015, before heading to Newcastle United for an ill-fated loan spell that saw him make only three appearances and Newcastle relegated after the 2016 season.

He spent last season on loan at Swiss side FC Basel, who, despite Doumbia helping them win the league title, also decided not to buy the player outright from Roma.

Doumbia will be hoping to do better in the Portuguese top flight. A Roma statement said: "Roma would like to announce that Seydou Doumbia will be sent to Sporting Lisbon on loan until June 30, 2018.

"The contract includes the option to buy the player outright."

Doumbia scored two goals for Roma in 14 appearances since making a 14.4m euros move from CSKA in January 2015.
