Aston Villa maintain push for Premier League promotion

Aston Villa moved to within two points of the automatic promotion places for the Premier League with a 1-0 win over Leeds United on Friday.

Lewis Grabban's first-half header was good enough to give the Birmingham club victory at Villa Park as Leeds suffered their 10th defeat of 2018.

"We scrapped it out," Grabban told Sky Sports, with team-mate Robert Snodgrass adding: "At this stage of the season, it's three points."

Villa, the 1982 European Cup winners, have played one game more than second-placed Fulham while Cardiff City, a point above Steve Bruce's side, have played two games fewer.

Only the top two sides at the end of the regular season are guaranteed promotion to the Premier League and runaway leaders Wolverhampton Wanderers now need just two more points to assure themselves of a return to English football's lucrative top-flight.

Wolves will achieve that if they beat Midlands rivals Birmingham City on Sunday.

But if other results go their way, they could be promoted before they next kick a ball.
