More Benitez misery as Dalian blow lead to stay bottom

Rafael Benitez is still looking for a first win in the Chinese Super League this season after Dalian Pro conceded two late goals to draw 2-2 with Fabio Cannavaro's Guangzhou Evergrande on Tuesday.

Dalian remain bottom of their group after seven matches in the coronavirus-delayed CSL and pressure is building on the former Real Madrid and Liverpool manager.

Benitez's side took a surprise lead against the reigning champions in the 16th minute when Wang Yaopeng emphatically headed in a corner from former Napoli skipper Marek Hamsik.

On 31 minutes it was 2-0 when Swedish international forward Sam Larsson swept in.

But former Barcelona star Paulinho placed the ball into the bottom corner in the 74th minute as Evergrande finally woke up.

Five minutes later it was 2-2 when Brazilian-born substitute Fernando headed in.

Spaniard Benitez, who guided Liverpool to Champions League glory in 2005, has seen his Dalian side take only three points from seven matches in the virus-disrupted season.

The CSL has been split into two groups of eight teams for this campaign because of the pandemic, with all matches played in Dalian or Suzhou.

In the Dalian-area group, Benitez's basement side face another tough task next when they face Shandong Luneng.

Shandong are second on goal difference behind Cannavaro's Evergrande.
