Portugal Euro 2016 winner Alves joins Greek side Apollon

Veteran Portuguese defender and Euro 2016 champion Bruno Alves has joined Greek Super League side Apollon Smyrnis on a one-year contract, the 39-year-old's new employers announced on Saturday.

Alves' long list of clubs includes Porto, Scottish giants Rangers, and a spell already in Greece with AEK Athens, and most recently Serie A's Parma.

"First of all, I would like to thank the club for giving me the opportunity to play one more year. I will do my best.

"I will try to help the team achieve their goals. It is a great honour to be in Greece and to play for Apollon," Alves said.

Victory over Euro hosts France in Paris five years ago was the highlight of Alves' 96-cap international career between 2007 and 2018.

He also scored 11 times for his country.
