Kompany hails Burnley's near perfect start to promotion push

Burnley boss Vincent Kompany hailed a 3-0 win over QPR as close to perfect as the Championship leaders showed no ill effects from a month off due to the World Cup break.

Goals from Johann Berg Gudmundsson, Ian Maatsen and Nathan Tella opened up a three-point lead for the Clarets at the top of the table and an eight-point cushion over the challengers for an automatic promotion place.

"It's never perfect, but that was close to it," said Kompany.

"I judge a team on effort first and I think everyone could witness the energy that this team has. We've seen so many good things in that game and scored three really good goals.

"It feels like a new start for me. (It was) a starting point, the league is level in our mind and we have to get better."

QPR are still looking for a permanent manager after Michael Beale's departure to Rangers during the international break.

The West London side topped the table themselves in Beale's early weeks in charge, but are now winless in six as they slip to ninth.

Watford edged up to fifth but missed the opportunity to go third after a 0-0 draw at home to Hull.
