Union Berlin have extended the contract of captain and defender Christopher Trimmel until at least the summer of 2024, the club announced on Sunday.

The Austrian defender, who joined Union in 2014 from Rapid Vienna while the Berlin side were in the second division, saying at the time "they are building something here, with thought and care".

Promoted to the Bundesliga at the end of the 2018-19 season, Union have impressed in the top division, finishing fifth in 2021-22 and qualifying for the Europa League.

This season they sit in fifth place, having led the table in September and October.

Trimmel was made captain in 2018 and has played 286 games for the club.

The news was made public at 10:28am German time, referencing Trimmel's jersey number (28) and the fact he will now play at least a tenth season for the club.

"When I came to Berlin more than eight years ago, the clear goal was to be promoted to the Bundesliga at some point, and I was convinced I would experience something great with Union," Trimmel said in a statement on the club's website.

"The last few years have been incredibly emotional and formative for the club, but also for me personally. I'm very happy to continue to be a part of, and to shape all of that."

Sporting director Oliver Ruhnert said the club were "delighted" to have extended Trimmel's deal.

"Christopher has known the club for many years. He is an absolute identification figure for his teammates and fans.

"His sporting achievements speak for themselves and we are delighted to have found a good basis for his future with Union."

Union Berlin re-start their Bundesliga season at home against Hoffenheim on January 21.
