Endgame Summary:

Spain have just suffered the largest loss for a defending World Cup Champion. A lot of credit must be given to the Netherlands. The Dutchmen did their best to advance quickly and decisively with both Arjen Robben and Robin van Persie scoring emphatic goals. This victory showed that Oranje are a force to be reckoned with. Of course, Spain will have to keep believing in their skill and, after losing their opening round in 2010 to Switzerland, they know that one Group Stage match does not define their entire tournament. What a performance by the underdogs and they will have plenty of confidence advancing into the rest of the tournament! Until next time! What a match!
90'
Full-Time
90'
Two of the four added minutes have passed and the Netherlands are comfortable playing pass to allow the time to expire.
90'
Fernando Torres on the other end looked to finish too cleverly and his effort is snuffed out by the Dutch defense. He could have at least given his side a consolation prize if he had just passed the ball into an open net.
90'
Wesley Sneijder had a chance but he slipped to the turf. Lens beat his defender down the left flank and sliced it in to Sneijder who can't make good contact with the ball.
89'
Robben is still looking for his hat trick! Every time they win the ball back, Holland are looking as if they want to score yet another goal!
87'
Whatever early struggles the Dutchmen faced, they have completely forgotten about them. Casillas saves two excellent strikes from Robben and Jeremain Lens to keep the score line from showing six conceded goals.
85'
Just a few minutes left until this group match is over. The Netherlands have completely decimated Spain in the second half. This is the most goals Spain have conceded in a World Cup match since 1950 when they allowed in six goals.
83'
Spain can't do anything from their most recent corner and the faces of the favored side are blank.
82'
This is certainly not what the Red Fury had in mind when they entered into this competition. Perhaps the Netherlands can put some of their 2010 disappointment to rest.
80'
Goooal for Netherlands, 1:5 by Arjen Robben
Once again Robben finds his way onto the score sheet! The speedy Dutchman races by the entire Spanish defense, causes Iker Casillas to fall and picks his spot easily. This is a complete rout!
79'
Spain need some kind of inspiration from Cesc Fabregas now. There are only 10 minutes left for the Spanish side until they can forget about this performance.
79'
Substitution (in) Netherlands -> Jeremain Lens
79'
Substitution (out) Netherlands -> Robin van Persie

Substitution (out) Spain -> David Silva
77'
Substitution (in) Netherlands -> Joël Veltman
77'
Substitution (out) Netherlands -> Stefan de Vrij
76'
The trailing team has won a penalty near the oppositions penalty area but Ramos's shot is just wide of Cillessen's right post.
74'
With only 16 minutes left, the Spanish side have allowed in more goals tonight than they did in 7 matches in the 2010 World Cup.
72'
Goooal for Netherlands, 1:4 by Robin van Persie
And Spain have continued to embarrass themselves! After a loose touch by Iker Casillas, Robin van Persie wins a tackle off the keeper. The striker does well to poke the shot into the back of the net from 7 yards out. Unfortunately the keeper hasn't played his best game in the first game of the Group Stage.
71'
The Netherlands look like they have all the confidence in the world. Contrasted with Spain who seem to have shown dejection after the de Vrij goal. There's still time for them to get back in it, however.
69'
Time continues to tick off the clock for the Red Fury. There is still frustration by the former World Champions; they thought Casillas was fouled before Holland's third goal.
67'
And Spain thought they had a lifeline! After the ball bounces around in the six-yard box for a few moments, Silva pokes it in with his toe. The offsides flag is up before the Spanish side can even begin their celebrations.
66'
Robin van Persie (Netherlands) is shown a yellow card
65'
Iker Casillas (Spain) is shown a yellow card
64'
Goooal for Netherlands, 1:3 by Stefan de Vrij
What a time to score your first international goal! Stefan de Vrij just gets his head in front of a great cross by Wesley Sneijder right in front of the back post. Now the Dutchmen have a secure lead with just 25 minutes remaining.
63'
Holland have looked the better side for most of the second half and they add a substitution to ensure that de Jong doesn't gather up a second card. Spain on the other hand are looking for some sort of injection of inspiration with two substitutes.
63'
Substitution (in) Spain -> Pedro
63'
Substitution (out) Spain -> Xabi Alonso
63'
Substitution (in) Spain -> Fernando Torres
63'
Substitution (out) Spain -> Diego Costa
62'
Substitution (in) Netherlands -> Georginio Wijnaldum
62'
Substitution (out) Netherlands -> Jonathan de Guzmán
61'
A quick Spanish buildup looked to make trouble for the Netherlands but Cillessen is quick to react and he stops the action with his gloves.
60'
The tempo with which the Dutch side are playing is just amazing! Robben picks up the ball in midfield and the pass is played on to van Perse. The striker is a couple inches from his second goal as the shot deflects off the upper goal frame.
58'
The Spanish side look to be on their heels after the go ahead goal by the Dutch. Of course the Red Fury have plenty of skill to overcome the deficit with 30 minutes remaining.
56'
And the Netherlands are in front after a brilliant effort by Robben. Costa has seen a couple of his challenges excused by the officials but he is taking risks after already being warned.
53'
Goooal for Netherlands, 1:2 by Arjen Robben
Arjen Robben with an excellent strike directly past Iker Casillas. The winger gathers a shot with his left foot and with his next touch slides by Pique. The Dutchman takes his time picking his spot and slices past Casillas for the lead. What an excellent feeling after being beaten by Casillas four years ago!
51'
Robben is brought down near the penalty area after cutting onto his left foot, the officials hold their whistles but the winger is furious.
50'
A powerful shot by Iniesta but it's not enough to get by Cillessen who dives to his right and gathers the shot up from the turf as it skids towards the right post.
49'
Good play from the Oranje in midfield and they've tried to maintain possession but the Spanish side have found themselves back on the attack.
47'
The Netherlands have started quickly but the weather has taken a turn for the worse as a torrential downpour has made its way to Salvador.
46'
The players are back on the pitch and back in action for the second half!

Second Half begins

Halftime Summary:

What a great first half between the 2010 World Cup finalists! It took the Netherlands the length of the first half to change the story in this 2014 chapter. Spain have very little to be disappointed about, they showed their skill during most of the 45 minutes and kept the Dutchmen at bay. The penalty strike from Alonso and the consistent runs from Costa, after a slow start, reminded the world why this team is so dangerous. Yet, the Spaniards will certainly be disappointed to concede the late goal to Robin van Persie. The striker took the header with class and quality, barely looking at the goal as he lifted the ball over a helpless Casillas in the 44th minute. 45 minutes left to decide the match but so far, this match has lived up to its billing!
45'
Half-Time And the halftime whistle blows! Both sides are going to half level.
45'
And this is what we expected from the rematch! Van Persie might be looking to exorcise some demons from his rather subpar World Cup performances and with that goal, it looks like both sides will go to the halftime break level.
44'
Goooal for Netherlands, 1:1 by Robin van Persie
Robin van Persie with an excellent effort! What a goal by the Netherlands! The striker receives a perfect ball from Blind and the diving header is taken absolutely perfectly. That effort was truly a great one by the Dutch number 9.
43'
The Spanish side see a couple of chances miss the back of the net. Costa had an excellent chance in front of goal and he wants a penalty, this time the ref isn't hearing it.
41'
Stefan de Vrij (Netherlands) is shown a yellow card
Another Dutch player with another late challenge. This time Stefan de Vrij finds himself just a bit too aggressive in his approach on David Silva. He sees yellow for the challenge.
39'
Robben finds himself behind the Spanish defense but sees the offside flag raised. He's not happy with the decision; it's close but the right call.
37'
Both sides have seemed to find themselves in the competition; the Netherlands seem to be pressing the issue more than the opponents but Spain seem comfortable continuing their tika taka technique.
35'
Not a bad shot taken by Nigel de Jong. He takes an effort from about 30 yards but Iker Casillas sees it the whole way. With only one goal in 61 caps, he may have been ready to double his total.
34'
Robben has found himself in the middle of plenty of skirmishes with the Spanish defense. Until now he hasn't broken them but if they keep attacking on the flanks, the defending champions will be in trouble.
33'
Another great cross from the Dutch side! Blind whips it in from the the left flank low and hard. Van Persie can't get anything on it but it was an inspiring touch from Blind.
31'
A great cross by de Guzmán but he can't pick out any of his teammates. The Netherlands are pressing the issue now.
30'
And the Oranje are back on the counter. But van Persie sees the offside flag raised.
29'
Spain are once again on the attack. They seem to have found their efficiency nearing the thirty minute mark.
27'
Goooal for Spain, 1:0 by Xabi Alonso
And the World Champions lead! A great penalty taken by Xabi Alonso; low and hard. This time around, Spain have found their goal much earlier than in 2010.
26'
Penalty for Spain! Costa with a great cut back into the middle of the penalty area wins a penalty for Spain.
25'
Jonathan de Guzmán (Netherlands) is shown a yellow card
A good buildup for the Netherlands but de Guzmán has a poor touch and he sees yellow after dragging down Iniesta from behind.
23'
Sergio Ramos gets his head to the corner whipped in by Xavi but he can't get any power behind it. The Netherlands would have been pressed to stop it had the contact been better.
22'
Goalless so far between the World Champions and their favorite rivals of recent years. Spain have won a corner after a bit of good footwork from Iniesta and David Silva.
20'
A bit of whistling from the crowd as Arjen Robben takes a seat on the pitch After fighting for a corner deep in Spanish territory, he's lost his shoe and needs to tie it back up.
19'
Costa with yet another effort, he times his run well but the shot is another innocent one that doesn't bother Cillessen one bit.
18'
Very little from either side as they have limited themselves to playing deep balls towards the opposition's boxes.
16'
After a couple of stops thanks to touchy fouls by the Dutchmen, play has continued. And yet a third whistle, this time on van Persie for nudging Ramos off of him fighting for position.
15'
The first third of the match has seen a couple of genuine chances, but neither side look to have settled themselves into the competition completely.
14'
Costa had a chance in the penalty but it just didn't get off his foot thanks to some clever work from the Dutch defense. He could have silenced the boos early on but his execution was not particularly sharp.
12'
And now the Red Fury seem to have found their way into the match. Another effort, this time by Xavi, to get the ball into Costa but it's picked out by the Dutch keeper easily.
11'
The first effort by Spain! Iniesta takes a shot from about 20 yards but it sails over the goal without really challenging Jasper Cillessen.
10'
The Netherlands have seemed to find their way into the match earlier than their opposition. But for Casillas's handy work, the 2010 champions would have been in hole.
8'
Oh a great save by Casillas! Robben just squeezed a ball through the Spanish defense and Wesley Sneijder launches a shot at Iker Casillas. The keeper is true to his name and comfortably makes the save. Both sides are still level.
7'
Van Persie's attempt to track down a aerial pass is thwarted by the Spanish back line. Casillas is more than comfortable wrapping his mitts around the ball once it bounces back to earth.
6'
Janmaat with a poor challenge on Xabi Alonso. The spanish side reset from the penalty about 40 yards from goal. But quickly relinquish possession back to the Orange.
5'
Spain have finally made some leeway and find themselves in the Dutch half. The midfield are looking for a pass through.
4'
The Dutchmen have been content playing the ball back to their keeper during the early stages. Both sides are still getting their bearings under them.
2'
Diego Costa has already heard the boos from his home crowd. The Brasilian native aligned himself with the Spanish side for international play. He'll have to ignore the crowd's cynicism today.
2'
Both sides have tapped the ball around in the midfield but there has been little effort to advance during the early stages.
1'
And we're off in Salvador!

Kick-Off
Nicola Rizzoli and his Italian colleagues will be responsible for officiating today. With both national anthems sung, the starting line ups have taken the pitch. Match number three of the World Cup is just about underway!
With plenty of pride between both sides, they have lined up to sing their national anthems. Very little time left until the ball gets rolling in Salvador!
Just about ten minutes from kick off and with both sides done warming up there is plenty of excitement in the stadium for a match that could be the start of history being written. Of course, the Dutchmen will try and redeem themselves from a painful loss that saw Spain lift a trophy. Are Spain still at the peek of international football or is it time for a new team to arise in Brasil?
This is the first time in World Cup history that the two finalists have met in the Group Stage in the subsequent World Cup. Both teams could benefit from the three points with Chile looming in the group and prone to make some noise in its matches. Expect the Netherlands to try and expose the back line for Spain from the wings. Of course, the Red Fury will continue with a formula that has worked in an unprecedented three international competitions. The match ups are intriguing and there will be plenty of opportunities to score during the match.
While some of the faces have changed, the sides are the same. Spain will rely on the veterans Iniesta, Piqué, and goalkeeper Iker Casillas but one of the new faces, Diego Costa is a curious spot and how he will fit up front as striker. The Orange will rely on their usual suspects, Arjen Robben, Robin van Persie, and Wesley Sneijder. There will be plenty of pressing form the Netherlands but look for the Spaniards to control tempo with their precision passing.
In just about a half hour, the most anticipated Group Stage match will kick off! Spain and the Netherlands meet four years after their World Cup final for a group stage rematch. With three championships to their name since 2008, the question is whether Spain can continue their international dominance. Stay tuned here for live updates!
