Glory beat Mariners to go top of A-League

Perth Glory won for the first time at Central Coast edging the Mariners 1-0 to go to the top of Australia's A-League on Sunday.

A brilliant free-kick from Serbian forward Nebojsa Marinkovic in the 43rd minute continued the Glory's strong start to the season, while compounding the Mariners' woes.

For the first time in their history the Mariners have lost three out of their first four games to remain in unfamiliar territory in the bottom half of the ladder.

In nine previous campaigns the Glory had never managed a regular-season victory at the Central Coast Stadium, their only win in Gosford coming in the 2011/12 finals series where they needed penalties to overcome the Mariners.

Kevin Muscat's Melbourne Victory lie second on the standings after coming back from two goals down to grab a 2-2 draw with the Newcastle Jets at Hunter Stadium.

In their first home game of the season, the winless Jets looked set for an upset over the Victory after going 2-0 up in the 33rd minute.

However, goals to Fahid Ben Khalfallah (36th minute) and Besart Berisha (48th) were enough to give them a share of the points and maintain their unbeaten start to the season.

Adelaide United and Sydney FC remain unbeaten after a scoreless draw in Adelaide.

Both clubs blew gilt-edged scoring chances to keep the Reds undefeated in 12 matches at home.

Life without Spanish superstar David Villa might not be so tough after all for Melbourne City, judging by their stunning 3-1 win over reigning champions Brisbane on Saturday.

City won for the first time this season in the week that Spanish World Cup winner Villa cut short his loan stint to return to New York City.

The future does not look bright for the Roar, whose title defence is in tatters after suffering their fourth straight loss.

The Western Sydney Wanderers are still without a win following their Asian Champions League triumph after suffering a 1-0 loss to the Wellington Phoenix in New Zealand.

Nathan Burns' clinical finish in the 80th minute secured the win for Wellington.

The result leaves Tony Popovic's Wanderers, backing up from their trip to Saudi Arabia and ACL win over Al-Hilal, without a win and only above Brisbane Roar on the table.
