Aussie boss says no talks on Cahill's future

Australia coach Ange Postecoglou said he would "be surprised" if talisman Tim Cahill retired from international football after his team celebrated their storming Asian Cup triumph on Saturday.

The 35-year-old Cahill scored three times in Australia's run to the title and Postecoglou said he hadn't had any discussions about the forward stepping down.

"I'd be surprised (if Cahill retired) because he's had a fantastic tournament. He hasn't said anything to me," Postecoglou said.

"I haven't had any discussion with his about his future and I'd be surprised if I had to because again he was a very important part of our team."

Cahill's impact on Saturday's final was limited by an ankle injury which saw him withdrawn after just over an hour.

He called the 2-1 extra-time win "massive" for football in Australia, where it has strong competition from more established sports.

"It's a massive moment for Australian football. All I can recall is all those people who didn't believe in us," said the former Everton forward.

He added: "This is one of the biggest moments in sport for Australia because this is an Asian tournament that's so difficult to win -- and a tournament we were never supposed to win with this group of players."

Postecoglou's team will next contemplate their qualifying campaign for the 2018 World Cup, which gets underway in March.
